4 Steps to Handle Bullying

Bullying is repetitive aggressive behaviour towards another person. It can happen verbally, through throwing of insults or hurtful words, physically, by hurting a person or destroying his property.

Let’s put aside the big words for a moment. Does anyone hurt or threaten to hurt you at school? Are you afraid to go to school because of a particular person? Is anyone spreading false rumors about you at school? Chances are you are being bullied. Bullying can start slowly and build up to physical violence or it can just remain verbal but no matter how it starts the fact remains that it eats at ones’ self esteem. It makes you question yourself and puts you in an impossible situation where you think you can’t win.

There are a few ways to handle bullying.

The first step is to report the matter to the school authorities. Speak to a teacher you trust and explain what is happening.

The second step is to speak to your parents. When they know what is happening, they can support you. Knowing you have someone in your corner is important through these kinds of trying times.

Thirdly, always move with your friends. When a bully knows that you have people to stand up to him, he’ll usually avoid those scenarios.

Lastly, know that it is not your fault! Bullying happens as a result of that person’s insecurities and character flaws. Do not be afraid to speak up for yourself but try not to get into a fight.

2 WAYS TO MAKE DIFFICULT DECISIONS

We know that we make important decisions everyday and we have established that we make some of these decisions without even spending a moment to think about it. That’s OK, but sometimes, we are faced with more difficult decisions and we become afraid to make a choice. I’m going to show you a few steps on making the right decisions the easy way.

  1. HAVE A GOAL

The first step is to have a goal. If you make a decision to read an hour every day, it could be that our goal is to pass your exams or to know 100 new words or to gather as much knowledge as you can. Having a goal helps your final decision fall into place for you.

  1. KNOW YOUR OPTIONS

The next thing is to know all your options. I always write down all my options even if it is only a YES or NO decision. Writing own gives you more clarity and helps you put things in focus. You must explore all of them and decide which one best fits your ultimate goal. After this, you consider all the cons, disadvantages and pitfalls of your decision and after that, confidently take your decision.

Why not try these suggestions during a difficult decision making process and leave a comment telling me if it helped you.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST CAREER

It’s the beginning of the term and you are happy to be promoted to Senior Secondary School. All of a sudden, everyone starts asking what career you want to pursue and they begin telling you that you must make that all too important decision as it’ll determine whether you end up in an Art Class or a Science class.

It’s quite okay to not have a clue, that’s why I’m here to help. I’ll give you a general guide on what you should look out for when deciding if you want to go to an Art or a Science class. Sorry to disappoint but this is not determined by if you’re failing at Mathematics or English. That’s something you can remedy by putting in extra effort.

The first step is to make a list of your hobbies and interests. Divide this list into two- the Creative and the Scientific. So for instance, if you love to draw, paint, sing, and write, that goes under creative. If you love solving puzzles, doing research, making things, fiddling with electricity etc that goes under the Scientific. With this list of things you love doing, ask yourself, “What am I best at? “What can I see myself doing for the rest of my life? What part of the list is longer; the Scientific or the Creative? That should give you a general guide on what you love doing. This list also guides the subjects you take interest in. Because you might love Literature and find it difficult to understand the formulas found in Chemistry. It’s also okay to love Literature and Chemistry, there’s room for you in the social science class.

The second step is ask someone more knowledgeable, like a guidance counselor or even your parents about what is involved in different jobs and careers. They can help you with what you don’t know about career descriptions and speak to you about the perceived advantages and disadvantages. Since they know you so well, they can also suggest some careers they believe are best suited to your personality.

It might seem like a technical process but it’s not that difficult to know what you already love. If you already know what career you want to pursue, great! This will only help you get to know yourself more. If you feel you made a wrong decision, do not be afraid to approach your School’s Counselor to help. I wish you good luck as you make this important decision!

3 WAYS TECHNOLOGY CAN IMPROVE YOUR STUDY

There is probably nothing you want to get today that you cannot get online; information, goods, services and even friends! In the past, you would have been reading the hard copy of this article in a newspaper or magazine. Now, you are most likely reading this online.

We are in the Information Age, some call it the Digital Age, Computer Age or New Media Age. This is a period in human history when there has been a dramatic shift from an economy based on Industrialization to one based on Information Technology. According to Wikipedia, the world’s capacity to store information in 2014 was equivalent to 4,500 stacks of printed books from the earth to the sun! Just a hundred years ago, the average person was lucky to read 50 books in a lifetime. Today, everyone is confronted with the equivalent of 174 newspapers everyday according to a research from the University of Southern California! That is really huge.

So, what exactly can you benefit from all the information available on the internet? How can you leverage on technology to ensure that you are successful as a student? Here are three ways technology can help you succeed as a student.

1. YOU CAN USE THE INTERNET FOR ASSIGNMENTS

One of the ways you can use technology to boost your success in school is to use the internet for your assignments. There is so much information available to you just by investing a little time to search through the internet. The answers to your questions are not going to come to you; you are going to have to search for them even if you had to consult textbooks. The good thing about the internet is that there are a lot of reliable materials that are readily available and cheap as well. There are many videos and tutorials on the internet that can provide you with answers to the questions that you have to answer. Use sites like Google Scholar, Khanacademy, Bing etc to find answers for your assignments.

2. YOU CAN USE THE INTERNET TO CONNECT WITH LIKE MINDED PEOPLE

The people you associate with will determine whether you succeed or fail in life. If you consistently hang out with people who are not success driven, you will eventually end up being like them. With the internet now, you can join groups and forums online where people of like minds are. It is easier for you to succeed when you surround yourself with people who think like you. You can easily share ideas and get motivation from other people just like you. There are many people and organizations that are willing to mentor you to success.

3. USE THE INTERNET TO LEARN FASTER

With the internet, you can learn faster and also at your own pace. All you need is access to the internet and the willingness to learn. Trust me, there are so many you can learn using the internet. You can learn how to bake, read, solve equations, teach, talk, plait hair, fix phones, use software etc. There are just too many things to learn that you can’t remain ignorant. If you have a passion to learn something, why not go online and find resources? You will get more resources than you thought were available.

The internet has both positive and negative uses. I encourage you to use it positively to succeed as a student.
